With Alpha D3-Fogging, Alpheios is helping to prevent the spread of resistant germs

16 jan 2012

The CPE bacterium is spreading at an alarming rate in Belgian hospitals. Over the first ten months of 2011, epidemics broke out in no fewer than three hospitals and sporadic cases of CPE were identified in twelve institutions. As the treatment that can be given to patients is rather limited, the spread of this bacteria is a worrying development. Only a few antibiotics are active against CPE, the Belgian Superior Health Council reports. The Council is therefore insisting on quick and accurate measures that will allow the spread of such bacteria in Belgian hospitals to be tackled (source: Belga). Alpheios is the only company on the Belgian market with a validated disinfection method that can be used to kill bacteria on a large scale, making the disinfection of patient rooms a simple task.

In collaboration with internationally renowned researchers and institutes, Alpheios has developed a sophisticated disinfection method based on the fogging of hydrogen peroxide. The method has been validated by the Belgian Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment Federal Public Service and approved for use within the Belgian healthcare sector for the combating of bacteria. It allows bacteria, including the CPE bacterium, to be tackled better, faster and more cheaply in healthcare institutions. Infected areas are disinfected within just a few hours and are ready to use again immediately, meaning that healthcare institutions can achieve substantial cost savings, as well as giving them 100% certainty that a patient room has been completely disinfected.

Since the introduction of Alpha D3-Fogging two years ago, the equipment has been used to combat bacteria (including the MRSA bacterium and Clostridium Difficile) in more than 20 different healthcare institutions and hospitals in Belgium and the Netherlands. Infected rooms and areas can be disinfected in practice by Alpheios employees on an on-call basis. Using their specialist equipment, expert employees perform the service at an hourly rate. Institutions also have the option of purchasing the system, in which case Alpheios will provide the training for the operators. With this method, Alpheios is making a valuable contribution to solutions aimed at tackling infection problems in the healthcare sector.
